Dec. 17, 1936: Born in Buenos Aires as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the oldest of five children
1958: Developed pneumonia and had to have one of his lungs partially removed

March 11, 1958: Entered the novitiate for the Society of Jesus
1960: Attended Colegio Máximo de San José, where he earned a licentiate in philosophy
